New studio will bring recording, songwriting and performance opportunities directly to young people across Kilkenny

Music Generation Kilkenny (MGKK) has launched a new Mobile Recording Studio, creating exciting new opportunities for children and young people across the city and county to create, record, produce and perform their own music.

Developed over three years through Music Generation philanthropic funding, the fully mobile studio is a strategic investment in youth creativity and the future of the creative industries in Kilkenny. Bringing high-quality recording, songwriting, music production and podcasting opportunities directly into schools, youth services and community settings, it will expand access, support talent development and equip young people with the creative and technical skills needed to thrive in a changing economy.

The Studio also features a mobile “gig-rig”, enabling MGKK to bring live performance opportunities directly into communities and programme settings.

The launch coincides with the publication of the new Music Generation Kilkenny Strategy 2027–2031, which sets out an ambitious vision for the next five years of music-making opportunities for children and young people across the county.

The strategy is built around four key priorities: progression routes and pathways; accessibility, inclusion and innovation; sustainability and partnerships and youth engagement. Through these priorities, MGKK will support children and young people to access meaningful music-making opportunities, develop their musical and creative potential and progress in their engagement with music.

A key ambition is to bring music-making opportunities directly into the communities where young people live and learn. The new Mobile Recording Studio will help make this possible, providing a flexible creative space where young people can develop skills, collaborate, experiment and share their own music.

“Our new recording studio and strategy 2027–2031 reflect a shared ambition to place creativity at the heart of opportunity for young people across Kilkenny.” said Dr Lindsay Malone, CEO of Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board. “At KCETB, we believe creativity is not optional; it is a fundamental capability for learning, innovation and success in an increasingly complex world. By bringing professional music-making experiences directly into communities, we are expanding access, strengthening progression pathways and empowering young people to develop the creative, technical and collaborative skills that will support them throughout their educational journey. In an increasingly knowledge-based and innovative economy, nurturing creativity is central to the vision of Ireland’s evolving tertiary education system, and Music Generation Kilkenny is helping to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to contribute their voice, their talent and their ideas.”

The strategy also places a strong emphasis on partnership, recognising the importance of working with schools, youth services, community organisations, musicians and other local partners to create sustainable opportunities for young people across Kilkenny.

The new Music Generation Kilkenny strategy forms part of an exciting period of development for Music Generation in the region, and signals a strong commitment from KCETB and its partners to ensuring that children and young people have opportunities to create, perform, progress and find their musical voice within their own communities.
